What is Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling/psychotherapy can mean different things to different people, but in general, it is a process people seek when they want to change something in their lives, or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.

  • Counsellors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil.

  • Counsellors help clients to identify negative ways of thinking that affect feelings and actions and teaches clients coping skills.

  • Counselling helps to improve self-esteem and promotes a change in thinking and behaving .

Counselling/Psychotherapy is a collaborative effort between the counsellor and client. The therapist, will not tell you what to do but will encourage you to talk about what's bothering you in order to uncover causes and identify your specific ways of thinking.

I practice Integrative counselling which means that I draw upon techniques from different types of therapy to tailor an approach specifically for you.

The Person centred approach underpins my work and elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is practiced where appropriate.

Many people find the Person centred approach an appealing type of therapy because it allows them to keep control over the content and pace of sessions, and there is no worry that they are being evaluated or assessed in any way.

It is thought to be beneficial to those who have a strong urge to explore themselves and their feelings and for those who want to address specific psychological habits or patterns of thinking, such as anxiety.

The approach is said to be particularly effective in helping those to overcome specific problems, such as anxiety, depression, stress and grief.
